Why Study in Macquarie University

Established in 1964, Macquarie University began as a bold experiment in higher education. Built to break from traditions: to be distinctive, progressive, and to be transformational. Today our pioneering history continues to be a source of inspiration as we celebrate our place among the best and brightest minds.

Recognised internationally, Macquarie University is consistently ranked in the top two per cent of universities in the world* and within the top 10 in Australia*. Our research is leading the way in ground-breaking discoveries. Our academics are at the forefront of innovation and, as accomplished researchers, we are embracing the opportunity to tackle the big issues of our time.

Led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor S Bruce Dowton, Macquarie is home to five faculties. The fifth and newest - Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences - was formed in 2014. We are also home to some of Australia's most exceptional facilities - hubs of innovation that unite our students, researchers, academics and partners to achieve extraordinary things.

Being a Macquarie student will be one of the best times of your life because you'll have so many opportunities to discover your potential. As well as starting to carve out a fabulous career for yourself, you'll have opportunities to travel the globe with our support, undertake an internship with a leading organisation and awaken your adventurous side. Whether you're an audacious high-school leaver, a non school applicant, a highly skilled postgraduate or an ambitious international student, we look forward to welcoming you to Macquarie University.

Macquarie University has established an enviable reputation for research excellence, despite our founding only 50 years ago. Our strategic research framework, World-Leading Research; World-Changing Impact, charts an exciting course for our research over the next 10 years and is aimed at accelerating and propelling our research performance to even greater heights. The framework identifies four key objectives that will guide our research in areas where we'll have the most impact and where the need for research and discovery is greatest.

The best way to truly immerse yourself in global issues is to experience them first hand. We make it a priority to support your globe-trekking ambitions by having one of the most generous travel grant schemes of any university in Australia. Travel with your course and you're almost guaranteed funds to help you on your way. Our Student Exchange program is one of the best. Study for just a couple weeks or a whole session. Not learning a language? No worries. You have many options to take courses taught in English in locations that may surprise you. The choice is yours.

The Global Leadership Program (GLP) is a University-funded extracurricular program that is open to all students, and can be undertaken alongside any degree at Macquarie. The GLP gives you the opportunity to get a global education right here on campus, and will inspire you to connect with the local and international community through practical experiences that have a leadership, international, or cross-cultural focus. Through the GLP you will gain valuable skills and experiences, and build important networks before you graduate, helping you feel job-ready.
